LA Olympic Art Park + Highway

    Looking Back in time.

    The Olympics of 1984  “The LA Olympic Organizing Committee (LAOOC) commissioned 10 freeway murals as part of the Olympic Arts Festival—a 10-week US $20 million multisite cultural program for international dance, theater and visual arts used to impress the throngs of Olympic visitors and to demonstrate ‘L.A.’s coming of age as a city of culture’” The murals were meant to be a witty Los Angeles equivalent to the path to Olympia.

    A Pollution Problem.

    Olympics should hope to leave the city they participate in better then before.

    “For more than a decade, California air quality officials have warned against building homes within 500 feet of freeways.” And with good reason: People there suffer higher rates of asthma, heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer and pre-term births. Recent research has added more health risks to the list, including childhood obesity, autism and dementia.”

    A Proposal for 2028.

    Using the ideas of the 1984 Olympic Art Highway Project this revival concept for the 2028 LA Olympics proposes to create a combination of highway caps and structures made with adobe earth clay and metal framing — combined with public art and engineered filtration systems to create an unforgettable experience making a site to remember for generations to come while also tackling the carbon emissions along the highway impacting the surrounding neighborhoods.
